| WHAT'S NEW! | COMFORT STATION |
January 29, 2009 Mālama Mauna ‘Ala Open House | Who could have imagined that one little comfort station (aka lua) could take so long to replace? Of all the structures existing at Mauna ‘Ala, the comfort station is in need of the most attention. It was unanimously agreed by all parties involved in planning the restoration that we should replace the 1940s era, cramped, deteriorated restroom. Plans were initially drawn up with three toilets and two sinks for wahine, and two toilets, a urinal and two sinks for kāne. We added a small covered lanai for shelter on either side of the comfort station. This was in anticipation of higher usage of Mauna ‘Ala by visitors and kama‘āina alike. Then, due to feedback from Historic Preservation, we downsized the project twice, resulting in the current plan of having only one toilet and one sink on each side, and one lanai on the makai side of the building. The lanai will be for kupuna to rest out of the rain or sun, and for all visitors to learn about Mauna Ala through wall displays and brochures. The architects renderings for the new comfort station are nearly complete. The new structure will fit in the available space without having to remove important trees or accidentally damaging major roots. The new structure would have a ramp for wheelchair accessibility and would be ADA compliant. We met with representatives from the Historic Preservation at Mauna ‘Ala to familiarize them with our overall plans, and in particular to discuss plans for the new comfort station. We were please to hear that the head of the Historic Preservation is in agreement with us to replace the comfort station (not renovate the existing structure), and in agreement that the new station should be ADA compliant for the sake of kūpuna and other visitors. More importantly, we have established a good working relationship with them and we have a better understanding of the process involved in obtaining approvals to move forward. |
